Favorita vine variety

The “favored” grapes of Piedmontese grape-growers

This vine has probably Ligurian origins, but due to its strength and resistance to diseases (such as powdery mildew), it soon became the “favored grapes” of winemakers in Piedmont.
Its branches have a natural erect growing that simplifies the work in the vineyard. Even the clusters know how to distributed themeselves on the vine, ensuring good ripeness at harvest time.
Favorita is mainly cultivated in the sandy Roero area, where it also stands out for its good productivity.

The Favorita variety was very appreciated as a table grape. When vinified, it was traditionally used to blend local red wines, such as Nebbiolo and Barbera.
In the early 1900s, the cultivation of this variety dropped a lot, replaced by other red grape varieties. Recently, however, the producers from Roero are re-evaluating the Favorita and vinificate its grapes for the production of Langhe D.O.C. Favorita.
